Drugs and Narcotics Defense in Tennessee

Were you pulled over on I-75 or I-24 and charged with drug trafficking? These interstates have been targeted by law enforcement for drug-related traffic stops. If you are charged with trafficking, you may face state and federal charges. The amount and type of drug you are charged with trafficking will affect the length of your sentence. Although you may be initially charged in state court, depending on your prior record, the amount of drugs or the presence of a weapon, you may be prosecuted in federal court.

Whether you are charged with trafficking or simple possession, you must take drug crime charges seriously. The penalties for conviction are harsh, especially at the federal level. Leonard M. Caputo, P.C., Attorneys at Law, can help you fight drug charges. With a former prosecutor on our team, we have the experience to protect your rights. For a free consultation with a Chattanooga drug crime attorney, please call 423-771-9956 or 800-783-4240, or contact us online.

A Conviction May Mean a Prison Sentence

The penalties for a drug conviction are severe. The federal sentencing guidelines for possession of drugs such as crack and methamphetamine include a 5- or 10-year minimum mandatory prison sentence, depending on the amount of the drug in your possession. If you have a prior felony drug conviction, a 20-year minimum mandatory prison sentence may apply. You could also face a life sentence without the possibility of parole under certain circumstances.

Our lawyers represent people charged with a full range of drug crimes, including possession, distribution, trafficking, manufacturing/cultivation, fraudulent prescriptions and drug conspiracy. Our firm handles state and federal charges involving drugs and issues such as:

  • Methamphetamine (meth)
  • Crack
  • Cocaine powder
  • Hydrocodone (Vicodin), pills and other prescription drugs
  • Marijuana
  • Probation violations/positive drug screens

Attorney Mike Caputo has handled federal and state jury trials for drug cases. With his experience leading the way, we will examine your arrest to determine whether your constitutional rights were violated. Illegal search and seizure is a common problem with many drug cases. If the police did not have probable cause to search you or stop your vehicle, we can argue for the suppression of evidence. In addition, if you qualify, our attorneys will assist you in alternative sentencing, including participation in drug court if it is available in your jurisdiction.
