New law allows for guns on buses in Tennessee

Tennessee remains one of the states with the highest number of gun-related crimes, but the state has again made it easier to take guns to more places. Cities in the state are now adjusting to laws that allow for guns in bus stations and on buses themselves. Right now, the cities going through gun-law changes include Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville and Memphis.

The law took effect on July 1. Nashville's bus hubs had to change the code of conduct. Previously, all weapons were banned. Now, only unauthorized weapons are banned. Interestingly, there is no mention of the new law at the stations. This could be because some of the cities don't agree with the change in legislation.

The problem, some believe, is that there is no way to know if a gun is authorized. In Memphis, officials have taken steps to allow only those with permits to carry their guns, though this is not directly stated as a rule in the law.

The law was backed by the National Rifle Association and stated that cities could hire security guards, check people's bags at local facilities, use metal detectors, or allow permit-holders to carry their guns. Nashville has been slow to take up the new rule, with its Music City Central bus station terminal still stating "no weapons." The Metropolitan Transit Authority Officials state that they're revising them presently.

If you've previously violated the gun laws of these areas, you may want to talk to your attorney about whether or not this change in the law affects you. If so, it may be helpful in getting your case dismissed or having the charges dropped.
