Gun crimes: Study shows advocates have the right idea

Guns get a bad reputation in the United States due to the actions of a few. Gun crimes are incredibly dangerous, but they're often not a result of people owning guns legally, according to a new study. According to an analysis by the University of Pittsburgh, lawful gun owners actually commit less than a fifth of all gun crimes that take place in the U.S.

The study looked at the guns collected by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police to trace where the firearms used in crimes in 2008 came from. In 79 percent of the cases, the perpetrator was carrying a gun owned by another party. In 3 percent of cases, it's unknown where the gun was from. In 18 percent of cases, the gun was legally owned by the perpetrator.

The research showed that over 30 percent of guns used for criminal acts were stolen, and over 40 percent were never reported as stolen by their owners. The stolen guns were only reported by the owners when police sought information after a crime was committed.

Even more concerning is the fact that many of the owners did not know when they lost their weapons. With so many people carrying multiple weapons in the United States, not keeping track of them is a real problem.

As someone who may have lost a gun and is now accused of a gun crime, you do deserve to be heard. Being accused of a crime you didn't commit is obviously difficult, and your attorney can help you understand how to prove that it was not you using your weapon.
