Abuse isn't only physical: the 4 kinds of abuse

Domestic violence is serious crime to be accused of committing. If you face a charge or allegations of abuse, then you need to know how to defend yourself. Before you can do that, you'll need to understand what domestic violence is and how it's committed.

If you are arrested on the assumption that you've committed domestic violence, you may believe that you're being accused of physical violence. That's not necessarily the case. There are several kinds of domestic abuse that you could be accused of committing. These include emotional, sexual, economic and physical.

While physical abuse may be considered the most abhorrent by the media, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and economic abuse are devastating to individuals as well. For instance, if you've been controlling your spouse's income and finances, you may be accused of economic abuse. In situations of economic abuse, the victims are unable to flee or find it difficult because they have no money or assets to use to start a new life.

Emotional abuse can also lead to trouble for you. This kind of abuse involves harassment and other negative behaviors toward a person. For example, if you consistently talk down to your spouse and deplete his or her sense of self-worth, you could be accused of emotional abuse.

Each kind of abuse has its own factors that you'll want to consider before determining how to defend yourself. It's the alleged victim's responsibility to prove that you did commit an abusive act, but you still need to protect your reputation and be prepared to defeat the other party in court.
