Man faces DUI charge for hitting police cruiser

When you see a police officer on the side of the road, what do you do? Do you give him or her more space? Do you move over a lane when possible? If you do, that's good, because it's the law. When people don't follow that law, it can result in serious consequences in the form of a collision with injuries or fatalities.

An accused drunk driver is facing allegations of totaling a Chattanooga police officer's vehicle in a collision. The crash happened when the officer was responding to the scene of a disabled vehicle on the highway. He was in his vehicle drawing up some paperwork when the other vehicle collided with his from behind.

The 29-year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene. He faces a number of charges, with the primary charge being a DUI. The individual also violated the move over law, which was created in 2006. The law protects people, like the officer, by requiring vehicles to move over a lane to give them at least one lane of space. This prevents accidents and collisions in cases where drivers are passing previous accidents or officers who have pulled someone over on the side of the road.

If the move over law is violated, a person faces a fine of up to $500 and could end up in jail. In this case, the 29-year-old man is out of jail on bond. If you face a similar situation, it's important to protect yourself. The allegations are just allegations; they don't mean anything without a conviction. You have a right to tell your side of the story despite what the media releases or what the police allege took place.
